My slow cooker has been my go to for cooking hamburger stew for 31 years, lol. Actually, my favorite slow cooker or crock pot is 31 years old!! It was given to me and my husband as a wedding gift. Amazingly that it still works!
This recipe is so easy and has only 6 simple ingredients that can be purchased at your local grocery store.
What is in hamburger stew? (scroll down for printable recipe card)
- ground meat – Any type of ground meat will work. For example, you can use ground beef, ground turkey, ground chicken, ground pork or even ground breakfast sausage would taste great!
- potatoes – Any type of potatoes will work. For example, Idaho potatoes, red potatoes, Yukon gold potatoes and there are many more to choose from at your local grocery store.
- onion – Any type of onion will work. For example, you can add sweet onion, yellow onion, white onion, or red onion.
- vegetables – Any type of canned vegetables or frozen vegetables will work in this easy recipe. Your local supermarket as many canned and frozen vegetable options to choose from.
- tomato sauce
- diced tomatoes – Any type of diced tomatoes will work, for example Rotel or seasoned canned tomatoes are great options.
- water
- salt and black pepper – You can also add more types of seasonings if you would like to, for example add come garlic powder or taco seasonings or even a Ranch dressing packet to your stew.
- beans are optional. In this recipe I did not add any type of beans, but in the past I have added Ranch style beans to my stew and it is so delicious!

- Take a large knife and a cutting board. And, dice up onion and potatoes
- Add to your slow cooker: browned meat, potatoes, onion, frozen vegetables, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes and water
- Cook: low for 7-8 hours until potatoes are tender OR on high for 5-6 hours until potatoes are tender
