Whether you are needing a simple and easy Coleslaw recipe for a Summer Barbecue or for a weekday Dinner, this is the perfect recipe. And, it’s made with only 4 simple ingredients! Talk about an easy recipe! It makes for the perfect side dish.
Since we are aiming for a super easy and simple coleslaw, I will be using a bag of coleslaw mix that you can grab at any grocery store. No need to buy a big head of cabbage and drag the food processor out and make a huge mess to make coleslaw. The bagged mixed will work just perfect!
Different Types of Coleslaw Mixes
There are a couple of different types of the packaged coleslaw mix that you can find. I have found that it usually differs from store to store as to which kind they carry, but most any coleslaw mix will work for this main ingredient. The main difference in them is some are made with just green cabbage and shredded carrots. Then some are made with green cabbage, red cabbage and shredded carrots.
I prefer to use the one with the different colored cabbage and carrots as it makes a more colorful coleslaw. Which one you use isn’t entirely important and just comes down to personal preference basically as long as they are a 14 oz bag (or pretty close to that.)

That’s all you will need to make Coleslaw! This recipe has the perfect bit of sweetness from the sugar and a little bit of tang from the apple cider vinegar.
How to Make Coleslaw
First thing, start by making the coleslaw dressing first. You will need a large bowl and add your mayo, sugar and apple cider vinegar. Mix well to create the creamy dressing.
After the dressing ingredients are mixed together, add in the coleslaw mix and stir very well to combine everything.
Recipe FAQs
These might be a few common questions that you may wondering when making your coleslaw, so I thought I’d answer them here.
How long does homeade coleslaw last?
If stored in an airtight container, homeade coleslaw will last about 3-5 days in the fridge. Just make sure to stir well before serving.
Can you freeze Coleslaw?
No. While a lot of foods can be frozen with great results, coleslaw is not one of them.
Do I have to chill it before serving?
While this step isn’t completely necessary, I would highly recommend it. For best results, chill for at least 2 hours before serving, but overnight would be best. This also makes a more creamy coleslaw by allowing it to sit in the fridge longer.
Do I have to use packaged cole slaw mix?
No, you could shred your own cabbage with either a food processor with a grater attachment or just by using a really sharp knife and a chopping board. If you just use a knife, the coleslaw will have bigger, rough pieces more likely instead of being shredded finer.
Can you use white vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar?
You can swap the ACV out for just white vinegar, just keep in mind that white vinegar has a little bit more tang than the apple cider vinegar. So, you may need just a bit less or an extra pinch of sugar to balance it out.
Are there other ingredient options?
If you want to up the number of ingredients, there are a couple things that you could add. You could easily add a dash of black pepper or celery seeds to give it a little bit more color. I’ve also seen some people add red onion to their coleslaw, but that’s just preference.
Can you make this into a Keto Coleslaw recipe?
Yes, you could totally make this a keto side dish! Just swap out the sugar for a keto diet approved sweetener. I like to use Pyure. If you do use a different sweetener than regular sugar, make sure to check the back of the bag and check to see if it measures out cup for cup or if the amount needs to be reduced.
Can you use Light Mayo instead of Regular Mayo?
Yes! you could definitely swap out the regular mayo for a light mayo to save some calories if you’d like.
